More Than a Hunt: A Life-Changing Experience

“I am nearing my 41st birthday and that prime-birthday milestone has me thinking about changes I’ve made in the recent past that have measurably improved my life, my relationship with family, and my perspective on the world. In 2023, I hunted for the first time despite a lifetime of outdoors activity and nearly nine years in the Marine Corps. After that experience, I became committed to growing closer to my food and to nature as a consequence. That desire led me to Broken Horn Outfitters in early 2024 as I sought the challenge of pursuing big game in Oregon’s wilderness. When I reached out, knowing nothing, Gordon and his team ensured I had the information necessary to give me the best opportunity to legally harvest an elk. They ensured I had all legal requirements met while also providing information on equipment necessary to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. I also made clear that my intention was to work for the kill, meaning I expected to be guided by someone who could push themselves physically: I would do whatever it took, go wherever needed, under any weather conditions. I expected my guides to be equally committed, physically and mentally. My expectations were exceeded.

All three of my guides were examples of experience and commitment. They worked as hard, if not harder, than I did to put me in a position to make an ethical shot on some impressive animals. As a big-game neophyte, I wanted my guides to do more than show me where to find elk, but I wanted them to teach me about these animals and their nuances, how they move, rest, migrate, and behave. Their knowledge, expertise, and careful preparation prior to my arrival put me in position to make shots on both of my hunts, and on my second hunt, I was given several opportunities on multiple bull elk. The boys from Broken Horn put me in the position I needed to be in to execute. That is what it is all about. The Broken Horn guides understood my intent and facilitated it at every turn. And while they certainly offered a catered experience (particularly when it came to dressing animals after not one, but two successful hunts) they were patient with my request to let me do the work and coach me along the way. They carefully walked me through techniques to break down the animal in the field, letting me do the work as I requested. As slow as I was, they never faltered in their commitment to ensuring I got what I wanted from my hunt. They delivered at every turn. And I will be back every year. 

Ok, so I had two great hunts. Fantastic. But here is where it really matters to me: the experience and knowledge bestowed upon me by the BH crew has given me the confidence to pursue large game. I would say “by myself” but that is a lie. Because I now have a hunting partner just as committed and hard-driving as me and the BH boys. That is my eight year old daughter. This is the greatest gift of all: the confidence to pursue large game with my child. Thanks to Broken Horn Outfitters, she will not be waiting until her late 30’s to get on the hunt.
